I recently got a ASUS X80NE Notebook from a fellow TPC member. I’m not sure if the price is right but compared to others i’ve searched for i think its okay and cheaper. I got it for around 26.5k and it comes with a free laptop bag and optical mouse. Good enough for a simple laptop. Anyway, after i picked it up from their shop in Makati, it was pre-installed with XP already and a few drivers. I was given a copy of the other drivers needed but when i found out the the audio is not working and there are still yellow items in the Device Manager, i decided to browse around and download updated drivers from the ASUS website. I got most from the X80N folder and some like the UAA and PCMCIA from A8N (which is almost the same model as the X80N). After installing the drivers and some softwares, i finally have it working fine
This is the order in which you should install drivers for ASUS notebooks:
1. Chipset driver
2. ATKACPI driver (you may install all 5 atk drivers in the atk folder)
3. VGA driver
4. UAA driver (under the a8n audio driver folder)
5. Audio driver
6. Modem driver
7. LAN driver
8. Card Reader driver (under pcmcia folder)
9. Wireless Console utility (in Utilities folder)
10. Bluetooth driver (optional - if you don’t have BT just skip it)
11. Wireless driver (if you dont want to use the windows wireless connection manager)
12. Other drivers (kb_filter, touchpad drivers, tpm drivers if you need them)
13. Utilities (optional, if you don’t like Asus apps just skip it)
Suggested asus utilities you might want to install:
- splendid (for the splendid utility to work)
- instant fun
- lifeframe
- power 4 gear (for the power4 gear to work)
- asus dsm (a software that cna encrypt/hide files and folder)
Download drivers here. Just type the laptop model on the upper right corner search field and hit “search info” then choose the os model you need on the pop-up menu.
My comment after a few weeks of using it:
- laptop speaker is okay, initially sound is not that good but after playing around with the equalizer it sounded better already when playing music.
- display is beautiful and graphics look nice. the splendid technology software that comes with it added to its beauty.
- the builtin webcam is good enough even if its just a vga camera.
- like most notebooks, it easily gets hot so its better to get a laptop cooler
- weight is tolerable at around 2kg+ with the battery
- its very fast and easy to use. i feel like im still working on my desktop pc except that it got smaller.
- got no problems so far…

Hi! Welcome to my plain 'n simple personal blog. Feel free

Hi! I just bought the same laptop recently. I’ve installed almost all necessary files, although now I’m trying to install the bluetooth driver. When it comes to the point where it asks that I connect the bluetooth device, what does it mean? Do I connect my cellphone (which has the bluetooth) or does it mean a bluetooth dongle? I thought this laptop has a built in bluetooth. I tried attaching the cellphone but it didn’t work. How did you get it to work? Kindly reply thru my email, thanks!
first thing, you have to confirm if your model comes with a builtin bluetooth or not. some model of X80N has bluetooth and some don’t. The bluetooth driver from the ASUS website is for the builtin bluetooth. If you don’t have a builtin bluetooth, then you need to buy a bluetooth dongle and install its own driver which is most likely included with its package. after you have installed the driver, you can already connect to it from yur phone’s bluetooth via the bluetooth dongle. (email sent too)
Good day! I just wanted to ask if your operating system is legal when you bought your laptop/notebook for that price? Cause I wanted to buy one here in cebu but it’s 30,000php w/o the operating system and I have to buy the operating where I want to buy the notebook which is in octagon. Question, Is 30,000php a fair price considering that the notebook doesn’t have any operating system? Please reply. Thank you!
@lighthouse
actually, i got mine originally without an OS. the shop was just nice enough to pre-install it with a trial copy of xp which i disregarded later on due to a virus i found so i installed xp on my own. the 26k price is for the “without os” one. usually if you’re gonna buy a separate genuine os it can cost u at least 3-5k i think from accredited resellers. well, for me, the 30k price is kinda expensive compared to the 26k price i bought which also comes with a free bag and optical mouse. though i would think the 30k range is the common price for the model throughout most computer shops.
hi, i just got the same laptop without os for a price of 1,900 riyals. that’s about 23,750 pesos. i’m working here in saudi and laptops here are cheaper because there’s no tax. sometimes even cheaper than most mobile phones. i searched the web for more info and i found your link at the top. so i tried your blog to get some ideas. presently i have no problems on my vista os. but i want to know if it would work just fine if i downgrade my os to vista. the drivers included are only for vista. by the way, i enjoy ur blogs kabayan.
i mean, i want to downgrade to xp. i have a software that has a compatibility issue with vista.. that’s the reason why i want to downgrade.
@prince yay! the price you had is way cheaper really. anyway, yup its okay to downgrade it to XP. actually mine came with a cd for vista drivers too. so i had to manually get the xp drivers from the asus website when i installed xp on the laptop. if you need help on hpw to get the xp drivers, let me know, i’ll be glad to help.
i wanna buy laptop soon… im eyeing asus x80ne… will u recommend it? is it fast? does it hang? is it good to install it with windows vista?
i mean windoes vista ultimate
I’m buying this laptop in a couple of days. Since it is pre-installed with Vista, is it really safe to downgrade it to XP? I read that someone is actually having problem with the drivers. However, as you said, some of the drivers of similar designs work well I guess I could try. And how much does a 2gb sdram costs here in the Philippines? Approximately?
By the way, I checked the Driver Download site, there’s a PCMCIA available. Which one should I download? THis one or from te A8N?
There’s one here says taht he could find the ATK100 driver for XP: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=263202&page=2. Any ideas?
I cant find the UAA driver in either x80N folder or A8N like you said. Can you post a link please? Pretty please?
@aira
the laptop is ok, runs very fast, doent hag -but thats using XP. i havent tried it using vista yet.
@mytonpadi
hmmm yup its safe to downgrade to xp. if its installed with vista then just reformat it and install xp. thats what i did to the laptop i have. and its working very fast and good and i had no problems with it til now even the one who’s using it enjoys it.
as for the drivers of xp, i’ll try check the website again and give you a list of drivers that you should download and from which category (x80n or a8n).
Alright! Schweet! I really hope you could help me out here with this OS dilemma. I’m getting this in a few days and I wanna upgrade it to 2 Gb Ram to handle the latest demanding games.
I also read that some are having problems with switch keys to work (Splendid, Bluetooth, Power4Gear). Have you tried to check these switches if it is working properly in yours?
And lastly, is it an XP SP3 that you are using?
wow great blog.. i’m currently using this laptop. like u, i downgrade it to xp. i purchased it last oct 2 and it works perfectly fine. cpu is turion tl 56 and the graphics is nvidia (256mb) giving me an opportunity to play games(eg dota) better than my desktop!
@mytonpadi
im using xp sp2. never liked sp3 since a lot of erros happened when i tried to upgrade to it previously on my desktop pc and i had to revert bac to sp2. i believe a lot have experienced problems upgrading to sp3 also and most if not all reverted back tp sp2.
about the switch keys, the blutooth key doesnt work really on the laptop i had since its the model without the bluetooth. as for the splendid/power4gear, i dont think i have tried those buttons or noticed them since after i installed those, they just load during startup automatically and works fine.
as for the drivers..let me get back to you in a while. sorry been busy really lately.
@soulsoft ei glad you liked the laptop and its working fine wth you
@mytonpadi updated my post. see above for details regarding the drivers
Oh fantastic! Thanks a lot for this kuting!
By the way, latest games runs smooth on this notebook right?
hmm that.. i havent tried yet. i have only tried flash based games and the basic counterstrike game so far but graphics were really nice. you could check the spec if it fits the requirements of the games you want to install.
Hi, i got the same type of laptop, I can play Call of Duty 4 Modern warfare at lowest settings, still lags a bit though, but the catch is you need to install the modified Nvidia drivers. Call of duty 2 runs very well for the laptop. I am running windows vista ultimate with 4GB of RAM on my laptop. I am also using ntune to overclock my system. you need a laptop cooler to do so. anyway nice blog you got here @kuting.
By the way, I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on my system with SP1, I had this laptop since august and i never had any issues with the laptop so far. it’s still advisable to just have 3 GB of ram if you’re going to use a 32 bit OS, for some reason the system runs slower at 4GB of RAM.
Here’s the link where you can get modified drivers for you to be able to install a newer Forceware on the system. you can even install forceware 180.44 for vista and 180.47 for XP.
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers
Try this driver if you want to play games with the laptop, but don’t expect too much from it. The 7000m was not really meant for Gaming anyway.
I got an ASUS X80NE for 32k at Gilmore Ave., Q.C. last october. It has AMD Turion 64 x2 processor, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD, NVDIA GE Force 7000M but without OS. It will be installed with a trial OS. If you want to have a licensed OS (e.g. XP SP2) you will add 5k into it. But here is the catch, negotiate with the technician that will set-up your laptop discreetly. He can give you the licensed OS for 1k to 1.5k, however you will meet him and will install it to your laptop outside the store.
My laptop works fine and i dont encounter any problem from it yet. It is good for gaming as well as in internet surfing.
Hi, i have same type of laptop.
I configured it to have dual OS (no OS upon purchase).
Now, running windows vista ultimate became impossible saying that windows activation already expired (detected not genuine one, although running xp still possible but yet to download utility drivers for it). Do i have to install a licensed copy of vista (not so cheap)? Any alternative/s?
tnx in advance…
@bram_stoker yes, if you want to keep your current copy of vista, then you have to purchase a license key and just use the key to continue using the vista copy you installed. otherwise, you would need to uninstall it and install a different copy (either trial again or unlicensed ones..hehehe)
@genre2834 hmmm maybe i can get a licensed copy from him then when i get back to manila..hehehhee
do u have the list of necessary drivers (2 be downloaded) needed for xp?
guess i have 2 drop vista if i can’t get a legit copy of it (huhuhu)
(nice blog… really helpful)
@bram_stoker well xp is better than vista anyway, well atleast for now. less hassle, less problems. hehe. i think i’ve listed what drivers are needed to be installed for xp and the link where to get it in my post above. but if its not helping much, let me know, i can give you the exact file names to download and install
hi have a nice day, i have laptop same as yours and when i buy it the os is vista and got no problem so far, but when i upgrade it to vista the i cant use the built in camera i cant find a driver to install for it, when i visited the asus website to download a driver for the cam of x80n series i try to install the 2 on camera but always error responce, i need your help how can i use my built in cam in xp while in vista it works well…how can i find the right driver for it…i will wait for your reply tnx a lot..rhitz
@rhitz, wait, you mean you had vista first then uninstalled it and now you installed xp and couldnt get the builtin cam to work? hmm if i get that correctly, actually, remembering when i installed xp on my laptop, i wasnt able to install any camera driver too. the camera drivers provided in the asus website is a different one and isnt exactly for the builtincam we have on the laptop. you may try check if its working by going to My Computer then somewhere below the window that will open, you’ll see a camera icon which when you click will open a camera window. or you may try install lifeframe from the utilities folder and use it to capture pictures, videos etc. i think the builtin cam should work automatically…no drivers needed.
Yes, i had vista first and replace it with xp then my cam didnt work, and theres no camera icon on my computer, i will try to install lifeframe now then i will tell if its work..tnx a lot,,
hi i installed already the lifeframe but nothing happens, everytime i open the lifeframe icon it responses “there is no camera to use, please install one” is it possible that my built in cam is deffective???i cant use it also in ym..
@rhitz hmmm thats weird. when i installed xp before, after only installing the chipset up to the vga driver, the camera is already working. if you said it worked before in vista, im thinking something just went wrong when you installed xp. so i guess what you can do is try to fix your installation if nothing else can be done.
greetings…. just wanna say to the owner of this blog that this blog helped me in finally deciding to buy Asus X80N. Im really quite satisfied with the machine but I too had troubles in installing drivers for xp. coz the drivers bundled with the machine was only for vista…
as for Rhitz’s problem, you can try to uninstall first the drivers for the offending device and in your case, the vga cam in the device manager. Then you can try to visit asus’s website and download all drivers first and then install them following the directions provided.
i’ll keep my fingers crossed on this…
i got it for only 28k here in bacolod no os pa… actually the price was 28990. the store give discount…
the store give it to me for 32k w/ licensed xp
john: what store in bacolod has that kind of price? coz I got 3 stores and their price is at 29,900 and 31,995, without OS
kuting: what is the stardard Video for X80NE? is it Intel GMA X3100, NVIDIA Nforce 610M or NForce 7000?
Coz im planning to buy this kind of unit but the it seems they all have different video in every store here in bacolod..Which one will you recommend?
opps, Nforce 610M is not a video but a chip set,sorry…
i was looking around online for hints, clues and reviews about the X80N. I have read a lot and my biggest concern was XP drivers. Today being bored in school i went to the library to take another look online. And i came upon your blog. Wow! your blog just answered a very big question. Thanks Kuting. Kasa lng ngayon nag aalanganin na ako sa price. Here in Davao it retails at 29,900 w/o OS. Im happy and perplexed at the same time.
maybe i’ll just get it. pikitan ko nalang. Ano sa tingin mo?
id really like to hear what you think. Yngatz
i noticed some stores don’t have the same specs. Merong 80GB HD meron 120GB HD at meron din 160GB HD.
Here in Davao i found one thats 29,800 with 120GB HD.
To Koi… The built in video card of Asus X80Ne is NVIDIA 7000M and it has a memory of up to 282 MB…
I also have this laptop and its running fine on Windows Vista Ultimate… I was able to install all the needed drivers and I haven’t encountered any problem when installing the important applications… Well, for games I did not yet try to install some high games, only the basic games like Text Twist 2, Bookworm Adventure and other small games…
I’m using it already for almost two months and it just running fine without hanging or any crash problem…
@breadknife first off, im glad my blog helped
to answer ur question, well the price of Php28-30k would be reasonable enough especially if you’ll be getting it outside metro manila but of course you do have to look and compare the specs that comes with it. Mine came with a 160gb space and 1gb memory, w/o os too, etc at 26.5k. it was actually the cheapest i found and i got it from a tipidpc shop owner. actually you may try check from tipidpc if there’s still cheaper ones available for sale or some known computer shops with online selling and free nationwide delivery. otherwise if you really want the laptop you can opt to buy it form the shop in your city at a reasonable price.
Hi,
Thanks for all the infos on this blog. It does help me a lot! I was planning to buy a laptop but tangled on both units: the compaq presario CQ40-108 for its ‘altec lansing’ and the ever beloved X80ne for its ‘AMD’ processor.
Well, after 4 week and an hour of thinking, asus wins. I have chosen this simply because im not a ‘vista’ lover. Vista does consume a lot of resources.
One thing i need to figure out is how to make the IR work. Because this unit has no bluetooth and I prefer it that way. Could any of you guys help. PLease…
BTW, thanks kuting for this blog…
-Thanks
this post is really helpful! thanks kuting!
hi guyz.. i just want to ask somethng about diz laptop.. here in naga city itz market price is about 33,300 pesos in octagon.. d LCD is 14.0″ CPU is TURION 64×2 TL56 and its windows vista starter edition.. however,, i dont really trust gdjets here in phil..but i dont have any choice.. i have to use asus x80n for d mean time.. and im thinking about its quality.. and good thing ders a blog.. but do u think its ok to buy here in phil. like in d octagon..? pls reply..thankz…
I have beed checking out this laptop for some time and it seems to be the best value that is currently on the market. Thanks Kuting for this blog! I’ve been searching for reviews for this but this blog is the closest and best that I could find.
NOokie… I’m just curious why you find it apprehensive to purchase locally. Well it’s true that prices of laptops here are more that outside but you should also be considering aftersales support. You may have a very nicely priced and speced laptop but if you have nada support locally, it’s more expensive to ship outside for any diagnostics or repairs, even if it has global warranty.
Currently the price here in most shops in Metro Manila for a X80NE is Php 30,900 as of last week. A Windows XP (not sure if it’s an SP3) is about Php5K and a Windows Vista Starter is about Php2K.
I don’t think you would go wrong with an ASUS.
hi,
first of all great blog…. really helpful…
have the same laptop… downgraded it to XP for some programs that will not run on Vista. Now every buttons on top of the keyboard works except that the card reader will not read any card. I also noticed that i have other devices that says base system device under device manager…I followed the instructions on this blog but did i miss something? please help…. i need to transfer files from my card to my a disk… thanks….
oopps….
sorry… i need to transfer files from my card to my disk… pala … thanks….
@mae
hmm there must be something that went wrong or you missed out to install when you installed xp drivers. that happened to me too the first time i downgraded the laptop to xp. saw that base system device on the device manager and i couldnt figure out which one i missed out. so i tried to reinstall everything and it was gone. i just didnt figure out still which one was the culprit though. maybe you cna try most if not everything again just to be sure.
@wormytux
hmmm im not sure about the infrared. i havent tried it since i dont have anything to use it for. are there anyone reading this post who have tried using the infrared device?
@nookie
hmm like said i wouldnt be surprise if the price would go somewhere between 30-35k out of metro manila. that would be fine already. just make sure it comes with a decent warranty from asus and the shop itself just to be sure. the laptop is really good and im sure you’ll like it too
the X80N is a good laptop, at least for me, I bought it last august and i am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit, i have had no problems with the laptop till now, the only problem with the laptop is the markings. can hardly see them since the laptop is totally black, can’t see the markings for the buttons on the top especially when dark. however i fixed the problem by coloring the markings white. looks ok now and i can see the marking even on the dark now. overall the laptop is good and i am even able to play Call of Duty 2 and 4 on this laptop.
ellow kuting…. can you tell me the email of the shop where you bought the notebook? want to buy one myself and by far yours is the cheapest that i have heard. thanks
@apollo i actually bought mine form tipidpc.com form the seller pc_reform1. he has a shop in makati and bicol i think. i just dont know if he still has the asus x80n since items being sold in tipidpc just go out fast but who knows you might find one from a different seller or find a different laptop. just be careful and make sure you’re dealing with a legit seller
elow guyz,, im jammers from camiguin,amhhpppp,pls help me bcoz my ASUS LAPTOP has base system device missing, what drivers needed? i already install all the needed driver but nothing happens, i lost my cd support kasi dats y i have to download drivers.pls help me to sold ths problem.
hello, i wanna ask have any of ever tried using 3d maya photshop cs2 or flash with this laptop, it be really helpfull
thanks
To Morbid:
R u sure u can play Call of Duty 4 on X80N? I mean, do you get decent frame rates while playing COD 4 on normal resolutions?
I just wanna know coz Im hesitating to install Call of Duty 4 on my X80N coz as I had seen in the net, this game has really high requirements…
Hope you reply.. =)
@Jammer and Mae,
i think i remember what happened to me when i keep on seeing that base system device icon on my device manager. it has something to do with the uaa driver which i finally found and got it from the a8n page since it is not include din the x80 page of the asus website. and then i installed the uaa driver from which in the process of installing it i was prompted to look for the audio and modem driver to be installed with it (you just have to be careful will this one since you have to browse through your drivers folder to locate the audio and modem driver. do not cancel any driver setup prompt included when you try to install the uaa driver). after that, the yellow icon was gone.
@ Jin Ichimaru
Yup, i can actually play COD 4 but at lowest settings, haven’t had the chance to check the frame rates yet but to set your expectation, its laggy. the catch is you have to install modified nvidia drivers before it can work. You can try it but don’t expect too much. Peace Bro.
@Jammer
The base system device you see is the media card reader, please make sure to install the Ricoh drivers for the media card. That should fix the problem.
Hey guys, why don’t we meet so we can check out our X80N setup. Just my two cents. hehehehe
thanks kuting for the update… i’ll heed your advice…. may be i’ll try reloading all drivers from start to bottom and if it will not fix it well, i guess i can redo everything then…
thanks so much again….
@Jin Ichimaru
Yup, the laptop can play COD 4 but at the lowest settings, 640 x 480 and set everything to low. the catch is you have to install modified Nvidia drivers from laptopvideo2go.com, I was not able to check exact frame rates but the game is laggy especially on grassy scenes. you can also try overclocking the proc and GPU using Ntune but this may damage the system in the long run, try it bro but please don’t expect too much. Peace Bro.
@Jammers
The Base System device you see is the Media card reader. Please make sure to install the Ricoh driver to resolve the issue. I’m actually an L2 Tech support rep from a well known computer company. Please reply if the issue is not resolve and we’ll try to figure it out. Peace Bro.
@Kuting
This is a very nice Blog yiou have here for us X80 users, it’s very useful and helpful as well. Great Job! hope we can meet sometime and share some knowledge. Have a great Day and belated Happy New Year!
Oooops sorry for the double post. for some reason my browser did not show my previous post, gues I’m gonna have to check this out.
@jin and jammer
yay! maybe that ricoh driver that morbid said would probably solve it. you may give it try. if it still wont work then try doing what i said in reinstalling everything. thanks morbid
well im glad this post has been very helpful. and i never thought a lot out there would have or be interested in the same laptop too. really cool
@kuting
No problem. indeed this laptop is actually a bang for the buck especially if your not really much into gaming. I also like how it looks. I like Black laptops. It’s my weakness especially matte black. hehehehehe!

TO morbid:
Gee thanks man. I already tried running COD 4 with the default graphic drivers from ASUS. I agree with you, it’s laggy. I even went to the extent of nabbing the 512mb memory from my bro,s Acer laptop. Just to try if 1500plus mb of memory would improve COD 4’s performance on my X80N.
But then, no luck, it still drags but especially on levels where there are lots of movements on screen.
Thanks again Morbid…
P.S. I’ll try to use the modified NVIDIA drivers that you mentioned in your previous post. Ill see if it does wonders…
