My US Visa

Last Oct 14, i had my interview schedule at the US embassy for my L1 visa. Its my first time to go there and though i’m pretty sure i’ll get approved, i still felt really nervous especially when i was in the waiting room listening to how others get interviewed, approved and denied whilei was waiting for my turn. Mine was okay though the consul who interviewed me looked serious and grumpy but i could say he is good looking, hehehe. I was asked around 5 question i think and the one i won’t ever forget was the first question he asked me - “how old are you?” while giving me that serious look. My other officemates who were interviewed wasn’t asked that question so they were teasing me perhaps i looked young. haha.  I’d just take that as a compliment then.

I arrived at 7am at the embassy and left there around 11am i think. It was raining and even with my umbrella, i got wet somehow before i was able to take an fx to Lawton where i’msupposed to take another fx to Las Piñas.  I was not feeling really well that time so i decided to drop by SM Manila for a while to have lunch, rest a little, and make a call at the payphones there since i didn’thave my cellphones with me as it was restricted at the embassy. So there a big problem came up. My file case which has all my documents and receipts got lost. Well, its not necessarily lost. I guess due to me not feeling well and add up my sore feet and hungry tummy, i forgot that i placed my file case and shoes on top of the phonebooth. I only remembered it after i rested and had my lunch which is like over an hour after i made those calls. I was really worried especially when ideas that someone could have taken it thinking there was money inside it etc. The documents inside are really important to me and losing it is like throwing away my life.. (well that was what i felt that moment…lol). When i got back to the phonebooth, my file case was nowhere to be found and i really panicked especially after asking the guards in the entrance if they saw it or if someone surrendered it to them or what and they sadly said none. And this this one guard told me to try my luck at the security office where lost and found items are stored so i went to the security office as fast as i could. on my way, i tried calling up my sister at home to ask if somebody called up to say they found my file case and thank goodness she said a guy called up and left me a message to pickup my filecase at the SM security office which is where exactly im going to. So i walked faster, i ran actually, and when i got there i was greeted by 5 security guards and there i found my file case. I actually cried upon seeing it, guess those were tears of joy. I was really relieved to have found it, that a good soul has been honest enough to surrender it to the security office.  I’d like to thank the lady guard Ms. Calicdan, she is actually the one who saw my file case and surrendered it to the office. I know she’s just doing her job but still i do thank her a lot. She saved me from super duper big problems that could have resulted from losing my file case.

So that’s a big lessons learned to me, no matter how bad i feel, never ever lose track of the things i have….

I’m a PC

I’m a PC - Microsoft’s ad campaign saying a PC is not a stereotype and so are we. View thousands of videos made by people who declares “I’m a PC” and you can add your own too :)

They say, Its Microsoft’s ad againsts the Mac ad. Honestly, I prefer PCs or lets say Windows than Macs. I guess i grew up with it and i’ve got used to it already. But i’ve seen and tried Macs and i think they’re cute but i guess they’re just not for me. lol. So, with that, i’m proud to say, I’m a PC :)

ASUS X80N Notebook

I recently got a ASUS X80NE Notebook from a fellow TPC member. I’m not sure if the price is right but compared to others i’ve searched for i think its okay and cheaper. I got it for around 26.5k and it comes with a free laptop bag and optical mouse. Good enough for a simple laptop. Anyway, after i picked it up from their shop in Makati, it was pre-installed with XP already and a few drivers. I was given a copy of the other drivers needed but when i found out the the audio is not working and there are still yellow items in the Device Manager, i decided to browse around and download updated drivers from the ASUS website.  I got most from the X80N folder and some like the UAA and PCMCIA from A8N (which is almost the same model as the X80N). After installing the drivers and some softwares, i finally have it working fine :)

This is the order in which you should install drivers for ASUS notebooks:
1. Chipset driver
2. ATKACPI driver (you may install all 5 atk drivers in the atk folder)
3. VGA driver
4. UAA driver (under the a8n audio driver folder)
5. Audio driver
6. Modem driver
7. LAN driver
8. Card Reader driver (under pcmcia folder)
9. Wireless Console utility (in Utilities folder)
10. Bluetooth driver (optional - if you don’t have BT just skip it)
11. Wireless driver (if you dont want to use the windows wireless connection manager)
12. Other drivers (kb_filter, touchpad drivers, tpm drivers if you need them)
13. Utilities (optional, if you don’t like Asus apps just skip it)

Suggested asus utilities you might want to install:
- splendid (for the splendid utility to work)
- instant fun
- lifeframe
- power 4 gear (for the power4 gear to work)
- asus dsm (a software that cna encrypt/hide files and folder)

Download drivers here. Just type the laptop model on the upper right corner search field and hit “search info” then choose the os model you need on the pop-up menu.

My comment after a few weeks of using it:

- laptop speaker is okay, initially sound is not that good but after playing around with the equalizer it sounded better already when playing music.
- display is beautiful and graphics look nice. the splendid technology software that comes with it added to its beauty.
- the builtin webcam is good enough even if its just a vga camera.
- like most notebooks, it easily gets hot so its better to get a laptop cooler
- weight is tolerable at around 2kg+ with the battery
- its very fast and easy to use. i feel like im still working on my desktop pc except that it got smaller.
- got no problems so far…

Windows Live SkyDrive

Upon checking my MSN mail, i saw an ad of the Windows Live SkyDrive on the banner on top of the page. I got a bit interested so i clicked on and was redirected to the Windows Live SkyDrive page where i learned more about it. So its one of the new services offered by Windows Live which gives you free 5 GB of password-protected online file storage. You can use it to store and access your files anywhere privately or allows you to share files with others too. It is accessible anytime you login using Windows Live ID. With all the free online file storage out there, i think i could use this one when needed. I kinda trust Microsoft more than any other websites offering the same service.

PLM Batch 2006 YearBook - The Pioneer

Finally, after two and a half years, our yearbook is finally released! Whew! actually we though this moment wouldn’t happen anymore after not hearing much news about it after graduation and getting a bad news that some list were lost. So last Saturday, I went to PLM to get my copy. Well, i was excited and it was nice to see good old friends and classmates. There a lot of changes in the university as well but still i’m glad i was able to find my way around - it’s not much of a big change anyway. Our yearbook is kinda heavy but it looks okay. It has the title of “The Pioneer” with an explanation on the first page. Pages are categorized by colors which represent each college and looking on the sides, it would be very easy to know which one is mine - the CET or the College of Engineering and Technology. Pages are colored red and obviously its the thickest. So i flipped the pages and looked up for my name. Good thing the names were listed alphabetically so i easily found myself. It felt funny seeing myself on it, glad that my picture and info didn’t get lost. I gave a quick laugh on the description i had given for myself thinking that time thinking i was so college-ish. Some info are already outdated like my old blog url and my mobile and home numbers. I think the only info that remains to be true is my home address and my email address. hehe :)

*Too bad the images aren’t that clear, thanks to my good old samsung phone..hehe

Moon Cake Festival

Last friday, we celebrated a Moon Cake Festival at the office, courtesy of the Filipino-Chinese employees in our department. It started off with a free light dinner at around 5:30pm. There’s pork barbeque, lumpiang shanghai, pork siomai, pichi-pichi, pansit malabon, and pansit puti. By 6:15 the dice game started and i’m on table 12. Well, i’m pretty much lucky because from the first turn that i had, i always won a prize from the 4th, 5th, and 6th group consisting of food/snacks. I had a bottle of C2 apple, a box of chocolate mallows, a box of tiny chocolates, 2 gummy worms, a company ballpen, and a box of hello panda. Too bad i wasn’t that lucky enough to win prizes from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd group consisting of gadgets and appliances, hehe. But anyway, at least i enjoyed the night and went home with someone rather than nothing :)

Here’s some tidbits about Moon Cakes and the Moon Cake Festival:

Mooncakes are Chinese pastry traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Typical mooncakes are round or rectangular pastries, measuring about 10 cm in diameter and 4-5 cm thick. A thick filling usually made from lotus seed paste is surrounded by a relatively thin (2-3 mm) crust and may contain yolks from salted duck eggs. Mooncakes are rich, heavy, and dense compared with most Western cakes and pastries. They are usually eaten in small wedges accompanied by Chinese tea.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, or in Chinese, Zhongqiu Jie, is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese people and Vietnamese people (even though they celebrate it differently), dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China’s Shang Dynasty. It was first called Zhongqiu Jie (literally “Mid-Autumn Festival”) in the Zhou Dynasty. In Malaysia and Singapore, it is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is usually around mid or late September in the Gregorian calendar. It is a date that parallels the autumn and spring Equinoxes of the solar calendar. The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties.

The Moon Cake Festival also is a time for friends and family to get together, enjoy sumptuous meals and play the MoonCake Dice Game. All the game requires are six dice and a china bowl. Just throw the dice into the bowl - and the different combination you get stand for different ranks of awards you will win. The game has six ranks of awards, which are named as the winners in ancient imperial examinations, and has 63 different sized mooncakes as prizes. But due to practical reasons, most Chinoys use toys, household items, school supplies, chocolates, chips or money as prizes. The magic number in this game is the number 4 “the red four”. It is believed that the winner will be very lucky in the coming year.

food thoughts

It seems that i don’t feel like eating my packed lunch today and i’m craving for something else which i still can’t figure out til now. But anyway, i had my usual rice and hotdogs for breakfast at home and i still have some pringles and cookies left from yesterday here at my desk. I like the taste of this chocolate chunks cookies - milk chocolate macadamia variant i’m munching on right now though i seem to be craving for some oatmeal cookies. I just finished eating a slice of pizza and then Alsie (my officemate and friend) gave me a banana (saba) which really delighted me. I’m so happy to have one coz i already had the last piece we have at home yesterday so i only have a ponkan for my fruit dessert for lunch today. Anyway, that’s it for my food thoughts. I wonder what i’ll have for lunch..hmmm…
